BVDA is Proud to Introduce the Oral Care Nurse Award
The primary aim of the British Veterinary Dental Association (BVDA) is to promote the awareness of the importance of dental and oral care for the general wellbeing of animals. We aim to achieve this goal by striving to improve the understanding and knowledge of veterinary professionals (both veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses) as well as animal owners and animal carers.
The Oral Care Nurse programme was initiated by the BVDA and developed by close collaboration with the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA). The programme is financially supported by Mars Petcare, Pedigree & Whiskas.
The aim of this web based course was to equip registered veterinary nurses to more effectively fulfil their important role in the promotion and support for oral health programmes.
During the 9 hours of web based continued professional development time spent during this course, delegates are to taught how to do an effective examination of the teeth and mouth in conscious and anaesthetised patients and to record and chart their findings. They understand the causes and development of the most common infectious disease of dogs and cats, periodontal or gum disease, its implications for affected animals as well as the prevention and the treatment options available. Oral home care and its essential role in prevention and management of periodontal disease forms an important part of the course.
An Oral Care Nurse can also recognise other disease conditions affecting teeth and the oral cavity and can assist owners to arrange further investigation and treatment by veterinary surgeons.
Oral Care Nurses would be very well equipped to play a crucial role as part of the oral care team to deliver optimal client and patient dental and oral care.
During 2017 the first 1016 Registered Veterinary Nurses qualified as Oral Care Nurses Enrolment for the 2018 cohort opened on the 1st March 2018. An additional module has been created for the 2018 programme (on instrument and equipment care) which is available for Oral Care Nurse’s that completed in 2017 .
